Haathi Mere Saathi - 1971

Introduction :

Haathi Mere Saathi (English: Elephant My Partner) is an Indian film from 1971. The movie has a Disneyesque appeal with an Indian twist. Haathi Mere Saathi was the biggest hit of 1971 going by box office collections, and was also critically acclaimed. Rajesh Khanna starred in the film.The film at that point in time was the biggest hit ever made by a South producer in Hindi.

The story was written by producer Sandow M. M. A. Chinnappa Thevar who is of Tamil origin and owned Devar Films in Tamil Nadu. Thevar also played a small cameo in the film. Directed and edited by Thevar's brother M.A.Thirumugham, it had screenplay by Salim Javed, dialogues by Inder Raj Anand, music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi. The film was also the first collaboration of Salim Javed, who were officially credited as screenplay writers.

Orphaned Raju, in the company of four elephants, has to perform with them at street corners, in order to keep alive. The back-story is that as an orphan, they have saved his life from a leopard. In time, he makes it big, and starts Pyar Ki Duniya (The World Of Love), a zoo in which various wild animals reside along with his elephants, among whom Ramu is closest to him. Slowly he amasses a fortune, and is able to build his own private zoo, housing tigers, lions, bears, and of course the four elephants. He treats all the animals as his friends. He meets with Tanu (Tanuja), and both fall in love. Tanu's rich dad, Ratanlal (Madan Puri), is opposed to this alliance, but subsequently relents, and permits the young couple to get married. However trouble looms soon after as Tanu feels neglected. Things worsen when their child is born, and Tanu, fearing physical harm to her child from the elephants, tells Raju to choose between the elephants and his family. When Raju chooses his lifelong friends over wife and son, Ramu decides to bring the estranged couple together, but thanks to the villainous Sarwan Kumar (K.N.Singh), he has to sacrifice his life.

The original name of "Haathi Mere Saathi" was "Pyaar Ki Duniya ".

Awards :

Earlier titled Pyar Ki Duniya, the film also won a special award from the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for lyricist Anand Bakshi. Its music on HMV (as Saregama was known then) won a Silver Disc for its sales, making it the first-ever Indian gramophone record to do so.

Reception :

Times Of Oman noted that 40 years down the line, Haathi Mere Saathi remains unmatched in its enduring magic, and Hindi cinema has yet to make another children’s feature to match its stature and success.

Tanuja said in an interview, “I showed them the film when Kajol was six and Tanishaa around three years old, and for two weeks Kajol did not speak to me!! ‘Mummy, you killed the elephant! Because of you, he had to die!’ screamed Kajol! And Tanishaa was annoyed too!” Tanuja loved working with the elephants after some initial apprehensions. “They really began to like me, especially the she-elephant who played Ramu. There is a sequence where he had to push me through a door and fight a snake that was about to bite the baby, but the elephant had got so fond of me that he refused to do so! Finally, they had to shoot separate close-ups of the elephant and my back and of me falling down!”

On its 40th anniversary on 5 May 2011, Pyarelal recalled,"Laxmi (Laxmikant) and Devar got along fabulously well! Devar had an innate music sense and a feel for rhythm, and he loved our title-track. But the tussle came up over the sad song, "Nafrat ki duniya", which was the only song sung by (Mohammed) Rafisaab in the film. I recall voicing my doubts. But Laxmi, the director and Rajesh Khanna were staunchly in favour of keeping that song. And the audience cried with the song and Anand Bakshisaab’s lyrics.”

The film was remade in Tamil in 1972 as 'Nalla Neram' (Good Time or Auspicious time) under same production banner 'Devar Films', directed by M.A.Thirumugam and with M. G. Ramachandran in the lead.



 आज से लगभग 40 वर्ष पूर्व बॉलीवुड की प्रचलित धाराओं से उलट कोई फिल्म बनाना सच में दिलेरी का काम रहा होगा, जिसे दक्षिण के फिल्मकार एम.ए.तिरुमूघम ने कर दिखाया| फिल्म भी ऐसी जिसका नायक एक हाथी था ! इस फिल्म में बगैर किसी स्पेशल एफेक्ट्स के हाथी को मानवीय संवेदनाएँ व्यक्त करते दिखाया गया, वैसे भी उस समय का फिल्म तकनीक अपने शुरुआती चरण में था|
 

ऐसे में, इस फिल्म की विषयवस्तु इतनी प्रभावी रही कि यह फिल्म उस वर्ष के सभी पुरस्कारों पर क़ब्ज़ा जमाते हुए गोल्डन जुबली फिल्म बन गई| साथ ही, किसी दक्षिण के फिल्मकार को हिन्दी फिल्म जगत में इतनी बड़ी कामयाबी पहली बार मिली थी|

कहानी: अनाथ राजू (राजेश खन्ना) चार हाथियों के साथ गलियों में तमाशे दिखाकर अपनी रोज़ी रोटी चलता है| धीरे धीरे राजू की किस्मत बदलती है और वह 'प्यार की दुनिया' नाम से अपना खुद का चिड़ियाघर बनाता है जिसमें शेर, चीता, भालू और बंदरों के साथ उसके चारों हाथी रहते हैं| राजू सभी जानवरों को अपने परिवार का एक हिस्सा मानता है |

फिर राजू की मुलाकात तनु (तनुजा) से होती है और दोनों में प्यार हो जाता है| तनु के पिता रतनलाल (मदन पूरी) इस प्यार के खिलाफ हैं फिर भी बेटी की खुशी की खातिर वह इस शादी को अपनी रज़ामंदी दे देते हैं| शादी के बाद भी राजू ज़्यादातर वक्त अपने चिड़ियाघर में बिताता है जिस कारण तनु उससे नाराज़ रहने लगती है|

इसी दौरान उन्हें बेटा होता है | इसके बाद स्थिति और खराब हो जाती है जब तनु को जानवरों से अपने बेटे की सुरक्षा की चिंता सताने लगती है| हालात यहाँ तक आ पहुँचते हैं कि तनु राजू को अपने जानवर साथियों और परिवार के बीच किसी एक को चुनने के लिए कहती है |

इस फिल्म की कहानी कुछ ऐसी थी जो पहले भी कई बार दुहराई जा चुकी हो पर मुख्य पात्र में एक हाथी का होना- यह एक ऐसा विषयवस्तु था जिसने कहानी को पूरी तरह बदल कर रख दिया| पशु और मानव के भावनात्मक संबंध को मनोवैज्ञानिक स्पर्श देती इस फिल्म की कहानी में दर्शकों को झकझोड़ने की ताक़त थी| इंसान के स्वार्थ, गुस्से और ईर्ष्या के सामने निरीह पशुओं का निःस्वार्थ प्रेम- मानव और पशु के बीच इस अंतर को व्यक्त करने में लेखक- निर्माता एम.एम.ए.चिनप्पा देवर पूरी तरह सफल रहे, जिन्हें अपने भाई एम.ए.थिरुमूघम के बेहद सक्षम निर्देशन- संपादन का पूरा साथ मिला|

साथ ही, सलीम जावेद की पटकथा कहानी के संवेदनात्मक बिंदुओं को बेहतर ढंग से उकेर गई जिसके साथ इंदरराज आनंद के संवाद मनोवांक्षित प्रभाव छोड़ गए| खास बात यह रही कि सलीम जावेद जोड़ी के रूप में उनकी यह पहली प्रस्तुति थी |

संगीत:इस फिल्म के लिए आनंद बक्शी के गीत व लक्ष्मीकांत- प्यारेलाल का संगीत बेहद कामयाब रहा| विशेषकर 'नफ़रत की दुनिया' ऐसा गाना है जिसे आज भी उतने ही चाव से सुना जाता है जितना चालीस साल पहले| साथ ही शीर्षक गाना एवं दिलवरजानी गाने कर्णप्रीयता के साथ दृश्यांकन के लिए भी काफ़ी पसंद किए गए|

अभिनय: उन दिनों राजेश खन्ना अपने कैरियर के बेहतरीन दौर में थे, लिहाजा उन्हें हाथी और नायक की दोस्ती पर आधारित इस फिल्म को न करने की सलाह मिली थी पर  निर्देशक उन्हें इस फिल्म की ख़ासियत समझा पाने में सफल रहे और यह फिल्म राजेश खन्ना की श्रेष्ठ फिल्मों में एक बन गई|  फिल्म में उनकी अदायगी काफ़ी संवेदणापूर्ण थी वहीं तनुजा उस दौर में अभिनेत्रियों के लिए प्रचलित भूमिका में बेहतर रही थी| लेकिन इस फिल्म के असली कलाकार ग्रेट ओरिएंटल सर्कस के वे हाथी हैं जिन्होंने दर्शकों का दिल जीत लिया|

यह फिल्म इंसान व पशु की संवेदनाओं में अंतर पर कोई उपदेश नहीं देती बल्कि बहुत थोड़े समय में ऐसी बातें दिखा जाती हैं जिस तरफ आज भी  ठेठ मुंबइया फिल्में की सोच नहीं जाती |
